sodas and salt instead of our medical leaders?

One big mistake the medical profession made was to outsource billing to third parties – insurance companies. As it turned out, doctors tied to insurance reimbursement lost significant control of their profession and their careers. Many CAM physi- cians took the road less traveled and stuck with the old-fashioned method of looking the patient in the eye and submitting a bill. They figured out how to keep the roof over their head while promoting prevention and fixing problems at the fundamental level. Another big mistake the medical profession made was to decide that chelation therapy, for example, was somehow faintly distasteful, unless used for high blood levels of lead. As a result, too many patients undergo the more glamorous – and significant- ly more expensive – by-pass surgeries and stent placements after a heart attack. Chelation ahead of time can keep the heart attack from happening, and is more comprehensive because it addresses the heavy metals as well as the chronic inflammation and infec- tions that are the underlying cause of heart disease. The profession traded away good, solid fixes for brass rings that too often fail to deliver on their promises.

It is good that a few doctors are asking the question, “What is the purpose of med school?” If they listen, they will hear that it is not just to manage diseases, but to also create a healthier society. The “product” many patients have in mind is health. How to make that as economically profit- able as disease is the challenge.
