2010Water Polo
Despite losing the best player in program history to graduation following last season in Lauren Garrigan, the 2010 version of the SienaWater Polo team has strong reason to believe it can improve upon last season’s 10-17 finish in which it narrowly missed its chance to return to the MAAC Championships for a second straight season. The Saints see three of their top four scorers returning (all of whom are only juniors), sophomore goalie Jenn Kissel back between the pipes, and one of the top freshman classes in program history.
With an expanded and deeply challenging schedule, especially early in the season where the Saints face a myriad of ranked teams in the early going, they should be more than prepared and firing on all cylinders come conference play as they look to achieve their ultimate goal of returning to the MAAC Championships for a second time in three seasons.
GOALIES
Although the youngest and most inexperienced group on the team, Siena’s goalie corps is supremely talented. Sophomore goalie Jennifer Kissel returns as the unquestioned leader between the pipes. As a freshman, she had her feet thrown to the fire and responded by being named a two-time MAAC Rookie of theWeek. Kissel finished last season with eight wins and a .531 save percentage and is geared up to take the next step in 2010.
Joining Kissel in goal this year is freshman Stephani Pouder. An energetic and hard-working goalie, Pouder, who was an All-Conference and All-Sectional Team selection in high school in Illinois, should get an oppor- tunity to challenge Kissel for minutes and, at the very least, provide a more than suitable backup.
CENTERS
The Saints have a blend of youth and experience this season at the center position which is anchored by junior Jackie Crosby. Crosby missed all of last season with an injury, but hopes to return to her 2008 form when she had one of the greatest freshman seasons in school history when she netted 55 goals and totaled 85 points in starting all 31 games.
Joining Crosby in the middle this season is freshman Cally Timm. A native from Mission Viejo, Calif., Timm is experience well beyond her years, having trained for the past two years in Eger, Hungary. A strong and physical player, Timm will anchor the team’s offense at the 2M position this season.
UTILITIES
A trio of Saints make up the utility position in 2010. Anchoring the group is junior captain Camille Norman.
Arguably the most talented all-around returnee this season, Norman is a Preseason All-MAAC selection after being named to the Second Team a year ago when she ranked second on the team in both goals (44) and points (75). A tall, lanky player with a long wingspan, Norman possesses tremendous height and awareness. Norman’s level of success likely will dictate that of Siena’s as a team this season.
Joining Norman as utilities are a pair of freshmen in Alexandra McDowell and Rebecca Robinson. A transfer from the University of Maryland, McDowell was a two-year team captain at Gulliver Prep in Miami, Fla. A quick and smart player, McDowell has perfect fundamentals, including her ability to set up others for goal-scoring opportunities, and should be a valuable asset in the passing game this year and beyond.
A native of Sinking Spring, Pa., Robinson was a four-year standout utility atWilson High. A 2008 Second TeamAll-State selection, Robinson possesses an excellent combination of speed and strength and should provide the Saints with added depth this season.
ATTACKERS
Siena’s deepest position entering the season is attacker, where a total of nine players will line up for the Saints in 2010. The team’s lone senior, Gina Guevara, headlines this group along with junior
standouts Molly Chamberlain, Nicole Hagi and Devan Ragg.
Guevara, who joins Norman as a teamcaptain this year, enters her final go-around in Loudonville ranking in the top-five all-time in assists, steals and ejections drawn.Atrue teamleader, Guevara will look to lead this young Siena squad this season both in the pool and out.
Chamberlain, meanwhile, may be the team’s top defensive asset. Last year she ranked second on the squad with 43 steals and is tremendous in the counter-attack both offensively and defensively.
