2009 Season in Review
The 2009 version of SienaWater Polo entered the season with high hopes, looking to build upon its unprecedented success of 2008, when the team posted the second most wins in program history (11) and advanced to the MAAC Championships for the first time ever. While the Saints fell short of their goal of surpass- ing their 2008 win total and making a return to the conference tournament, the 2009 SienaWater Polo team still had its fair share of memorable moments.
After opening the season with three straight defeats, the Saints found their success out west in California where they secured a thrilling 9-6 win overWhittier. Senior captain Lauren Garrigan recorded her first of numerous hat tricks during the season, sending notice to both MAAC schools and teams across the country alike that she would be one of the most feared offensive weapons in the country.
While that game was an acknowledgment of Garrigan’s abilities, it was also a coming-out party for a new star on the scene in freshman goalie Jennifer Kissel. The rookie made six saves and added three steals that day to pick up her first collegiate win and help propel her to her first of two MAAC Rookie of the Week awards.
Siena would win just two more games until mid-March – in the ECAC Championships seventh-place game against Mercyhurst and in a Marist Invite matchup with Utica – before finding its stride out in Ann Arbor, Mich. in theWolverine Invitational. The Saints entered the weekend at just 3-8, but quickly made a statement that they would be a challenger during the season.
Camille Norman
Garrigan had one of her finest weekends of the season, scoring five of her seven goals including the game-winner in the third quarter against Gannon, while Ann Arbor native Devan Ragg compiled a tremendous homecoming by registering double- digit points over the first two games of the Invitational.
The victories in Michigan sent the Saints on a streak where they would win five of their next seven, marking the squad’s hottest stretch of the year. While the Saints ended up faltering towards the end of the MAAC season and just missed out on a return trip to the conference tourna- ment, the year was still inmany ways a success.
While it was painful to say goodbye to senior captain and team leader Lauren Garrigan, she had a season to remember, setting a program- record with 83 goals on her way to being named the MAAC Player of the Year, while also graduating as the program’s all-time leader in six of the eight major offensive statis- tical categories. Additionally, sophomores Camille Norman, who was named an All- MAAC Second Team Selection, Devan Ragg and Nicole Hagi finished second, third and fourth respectively on the team in scoring, proving that the future should be very bright for the next few years. Factor in rising sophomore goalie Jenn Kissel, who recorded eight wins and a .531 save percentage, and the future is indeed bright for the Saints heading into 2010…and beyond.
