l The men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor season Saturday at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C. The teams combined for three first-place finishes in the two-day meet. l The women’s team swept the javelin throw, as freshman Andrea Hopkins took first on a throw of 47.10m, the second farthest in Duke history. Teammates Amy Matulewicz and Shannon Sullivan finished second and third, respectively. l The Blue Devils dominated the women’s 1,500 meters, with 16 Duke runners placing in the top 20. Madeline Morgan claimed the top spot with a time of 4:26.48, while Suejin Ahn and Esther Vermeer followed in second and third place, respectively. l Tony Shirk led the men’s team with his first- place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.95m for the victory.

Men’s Tennis

Record: 6-5 (0-0 ACC)

l The Blue Devils knocked off third-ranked USC in a close 4-3 victory last Wednesday in Ambler Stadium. It was Duke’s first win over a top-five opponent since a victory over No. 5 North Carolina in 2007. l Freshman Henrique Cunha gave Duke the win, as he defeated the No. 1 singles player in the nation, USC’s Steve Johnson, by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the deciding contest. l After the 44th-ranked duo of Alain Michel and Torsten Wietoska recorded a win at No. 3 doubles, Cunha and Reid Carleton secured the point for the Blue Devils with their victory on court one. l Wietoska and David Holland aided Duke’s victory with their wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Both edged ranked opponents in the victory.

Women’s Tennis

Record: 12-2 (1-0 ACC)

l The women’s tennis team improved to 12-2 in dual matches this spring with a 6-1 victory at William & Mary on Sunday. The match was rescheduled after inclement weather forced its cancellation on March 11 in Puerto Rico.

l Amanda Granson and Ellah Nze, ranked

43rd-nationally, earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles to give them a record of 9-4 this season. l After dropping the doubles point to William & Mary, the Blue Devils stormed back to take all six singles matches. Senior Elizabeth Plotkin led Duke off the courts, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court two.

l Junior Reka Zsilinszka, ranked 56th-

natinonally, recorded the 100th win of her career in a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Zsilinszka now owns a winning percentage of .800, the second best all-time among Duke players who have reached the 100-win mark.

Swimming & Diving

Record: Men - 3-6 (2-5 ACC) Record: Women - 6-5 (3-5 ACC)

l Junior Ashley Twichell and sophomore diver Abby Johnston represented Duke over the weekend at the 2010 Women’s NCAA Championships in West Layfayette, Ind. Twichell and Johnston combined for 21 points, propelling Duke to a 28th-place finish at the national competition. l Johnston earned All-America honors for the second straight year on Friday. She totaled 331.80 points in the one-meter diving finals to finish fourth in the nation. Johnston also took 14th on the three-meter board, and 25th in the platform competition. l Twichell entered Saturday’s 1650 freestyle as the sixth seed. She finished in 16:09.65 to take 14th place in the nation. Twichell also finished 43rd in the women’s 500 freestyle.

Baseball

Record: 13-7 (2-4 ACC)

l The Blue Devils went 2-3 last week, outlasting Liberty, 3-2, in 11 innings on Wednesday. Duke dropped three straight to visiting No. 11 Miami over the weekend, but picked up a 6-2 win Tuesday night at Davidson. l Will Piwnica-Worms legged out a two-run single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning on Wednesday, giving Duke a 3-2 victory over Liberty. l The Blue Devils received five scoreless innings of relief from Ben Grisz, Marcus Stroman and Ryan Knott, who was credited with the win. l In Friday’s 3-1 loss to Miami, catcher Ryan McCurdy was hit by two pitches to put his career total at 61 – tied for 13th in NCAA history. l Duke took a 5-1 lead in Sunday’s series finale against Miami, but the Hurricanes rallied for a 7-6 win. Jeremy Gould recorded two doubles, becoming the 16th player in Duke history to reach 200 career hits. l Piwnica-Worms went 3-for-4 in Tuesday’s win at Davidson, hitting three doubles and driving in three runs. Jake Lemmerman sealed the victory with a home run in the top of the ninth.

Women’s Lacrosse

Record: 9-1 (1-1 ACC)

l The third-ranked women’s lacrosse team tallied two more wins last week, blowing past ACC-foe Virginia Tech on the road Wednesday, 18-6, and defeating Navy at home Sunday, 19- 10. l Duke tallied its first ACC win of the season over Virginia Tech. The squad outshot the Hokies by an overwhelming margin of 42-13. l Ten different players scored in the victory, led

by senior Lindsay Gilbride’s five goals. Sarah

Bullard recorded a hat trick, while Christie

Kaestner added a goal and four assists. l Sunday marked Duke’s first meeting with the United States Naval Academy. The Blue Devils did not allow a Navy shot until 11:42 in the first half and held the Mids to just 22 shots the entire contest. l Gilbride and Kaestner paced the offense with six points each. Gilbride netted four scores in the win, while Kaestner added three. l Freshman Kaitlin Gaiss picked up her third win in goal for Duke, tying a career high with eight saves.

Wrestling

Record: 3-8 (0-5 ACC)

l Konrad Dudziak finished his career at Duke with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championships. The senior heavyweight earned All-America honors for the second straight season, falling to No. 3 seed Zachery Rey of Lehigh in the third-place match. Dudz- iak also earned a 3-2 decision in the consola- tion final prior to the third-place match to fin- ish his season with an 18-2 overall record. He finishes his career with a ledger of 78-18 for a .813 winning percentage, which ranks fourth all-time at Duke.
