Two Months Later, Duke Relief Efforts Continue in Haiti

When tragedy rocked Haiti on Jan. 12, members of the Duke com-

munity voiced an immediate desire to help. Since then, people across campus -- from students and faculty to medical professionals -- have responded to the call for help in ways large and small. Now, Duke is setting the stage to align its relief efforts in Haiti with its research and teaching missions. A class on Creole for relief workers, organized by French instructor Deborah Jenson, helped set the stage. Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president of student affairs, went a step

further, asking Provost Peter Lange to encourage schools and institutes within Duke to explore what role they may play in addressing Haiti’s needs. One of Duke’s strategic goals is to use knowledge in the service

of society. As such, Lange intends to devote the 2010-2011 Provost’s Lecture Series to the topic of disaster relief. Among the efforts is the DukeEngage in Haiti program, scheduled

to begin on June 1. Students will work with underserved families around the issues of maternal and child health.

Duke Home Page Extends Welcome in Eight Languages

Bienvenue a l’Universite Duke – or, if you prefer, bienvenido. In

French, Spanish and six other languages, the message is the same in a new feature Duke’s Office of News and Communications (ONC) launched last week on the university home page: Welcome to Duke. The site now features an introduction to Duke in Arabic, Chinese,

Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Russian, as well as in French and Span- ish. Working with faculty members and others across the campus, ONC translated the one-page description into the eight languages. Each ver- sion appears in an appropriate font, ending with a single English phrase, “Welcome to Duke!” “Duke is a global university, attracting students and faculty from

around the world, and programs that extend from a new campus in China to global health initiatives in Tanzania,” said Michael J. Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations. “So we want the home page to reflect the international spirit you find on the campus. We’re grateful to everyone who pitched in to help with the translations.”

Webcast of ‘Sampling Soul’ Session Attracts 10,000 Online View- ers

A special webcast of the popular spring course, “Sampling Soul,” set

a record last Tuesday for live streaming video at Duke with an audience of more than 10,000 viewers. The class is co-taught by Mark Anthony Neal, a professor of African

and African American Studies, and Grammy-winning music producer, 9th Wonder. Bucknell English professor James Braxton Peterson, Duke ’93, joined them for a discussion of rapper Nas’ 1994 album, “Illmatic.” While Neal’s students filtered into Richard White Lecture Hall, stu-

dents of hip hop gathered online to take in the lecture and offer real-time commentary on Twitter. Minutes before the event started, hundreds of online viewers had announced their anticipation on Twitter. By the end of the night, the number of Twitter postings for the ses-

sion almost reached 500. Others emailed dozens of questions ranging from the academic to the absurd.

Duke Biologist’s Poetry Takes Aim at an Endearing Species -- Children

As a biologist and environmental researcher, Rob Jackson works to

illuminate the sometimes gloomy complexities of global climate change and biodiversity loss. But his new book of illustrated children’s poems, “Weekend Mischief,” casts a decidedly brighter light. Written from a young boy’s point of view, the 20 poems in Jackson’s

second book of verse ponder the burning question: Why does the week- end go so fast? Jackson, the father of three boys, is a Nicholas professor of global

environmental change and professor of biology. His first book of children’s poems, “Animal Mischief,” was published in 2006. It celebrated the oddi- ties of animal biology through a series of poems about penguins, sharks, fireflies and other creatures that capture children’s imaginations. In “Weekend Mischief,” Jackson focuses his wit on the antics of the

pre-teen child. Each poem explores a different weekend activity as seen through young eyes. The beauty of nature, the joy of being outdoors and the too-swift passage of time are recurring themes, both in the poems themselves and the illustrations by artist Mark Beech.

They Said It

“There were so many ties, lead changes, and so much excite- ment. Very physical play out there, a terrific basketball game overall. LSU is a terrific basketball team and I am really proud of our team. Especially, the second half defense with the field goal percentage that was forced.”

-- Joanne P. McCallie, Duke women’s basketball head coach

“I thought we got a little bit better today and that was the plan. You can’t worry about any opponent other than your next one, and we came out and executed pretty well. We obviously got contributions from a lot of different players and that is by de- sign.

-- John Danowski, Duke men’s lacrosse head coach

“This team has so much talent and so much potential. Ev- ery game somebody steps up, and that’s the exciting thing about this team. We might not shoot good every game, but we play defense and play hard, and any game somebody is going to surprise you.”

-- Nolan Smith, Duke men’s basketball junior

“I was very impressed with the way he [Konrad Dudziak] de- fended against an opponent who was so much bigger than he was. It was a disappointing way to finish, but he’s had a great career here at Duke.”

-- Clar Anderson, Duke wrestling head coach
