Each issue of Clever Stuff looks at a particular industry challenge. With the positive outlook and good news stories about a recovering economy, 2010 is not just about survival, it’s about growth and new ventures.

History shows that a recession can be the best time to invest in new ideas, products and business ventures. The recession itself generates opportunities to be explored, but there are also fewer products launched and competitors are less likely to be in a position to copy the new idea quickly.

Despite popular belief, (well run) small businesses hold their own during downturns, and carry on the entrepreneurial spirit. This seems to be because smaller businesses are better attuned to their customers, and can change more quickly, but is also due to the attitude and expectations. Smaller businesses, particularly start-ups, don’t expect the same steady growth as larger, more established companies.

Did you know that street dancing is a collective term of different dance styles, such as hip-hop and funk, that all evolved at street level through social interaction? Often the coordinated dance moves are planned through a collaborative effort from the members. Teamwork at its best.
