As the saying goes “If you go
nowhere, then go to the South
West.” There you will find the
deep Celtic soul of Ireland. It is a
land full of ancient castles and
beautiful landscapes.
Kerry Cork
SOUTH WEST
I
t is peppered with secluded
villages, dramatic scenery and
littered with mountain passes,
dreamy glistening lakes and
stunning coastline views. For golfers
this is a region where so many world-class courses
exist, literally lying side by side with each other.
The people here are friendly, funny and
welcoming hosts, and treat visitors with traditional
warmth. The coastline is justly famous; its deep bays
created by the rolling breakers of the Atlantic Ocean
are enthralling. And there are hundreds of miles of
stunning coastline along the legendary counties of
Cork and Kerry, as well as mountain ranges, lakes
and rivers. This makes the courses all the more
stunning and exciting to play.
For the golfer the names of Kenmare, Killarney,
and the Old Head are as well known as St Andrews,
Wentworth and Augusta. In fact there are more than
fi fty golf courses in the region and each has
something special that makes it a must play. For
example the 9th Hole at The Dingle Links/ Ceann
Sibeal Course is renown for its challenge. Called by
its Irish name “Ifreann” which in English means
“Hell”! There are the breathtaking views over the
beach at the Ballybunion links course and the
beautiful 4th hole, with its shot over Lough Mahon,
at Cork Golf Club.
For the golfer the South West is a veritable
paradise of magical and even mythical courses, but
this region has so much more to offer the visitor as
well. With it’s beaches and crags, and moors and
mountain ranges, there is plenty of stunning scenery
to explore. Walking is a popular pastime, as is
cycling, and many people combine their golfi ng here
with an adventure holiday as well. Meanwhile for the
sportsman you cannot miss an opportunity to do
some fi shing. Standing in the lakes of the Kerry
Mountains waiting for the trout to bite is an
incredible experience.
But you can also discover the charms of Cork
City, Blarney and West Cork or have fun with the
family on a boat in Youghal. In North Kerry you can
discover some of Ireland’s literary heritage, tour the
world famous Ring of Kerry and Killarney, and enjoy
an Irish language experience on the Dingle
Peninsula. The choice is yours.
