another Irish name was on the trophy when Shane Lowry,
an amateur at the time, won a memorable championship at
Co. Louth Golf Club in 2009.
The sheer quality of the players who have claimed the Irish
Open through the years is testament to how it is revered among
tour players, with the tournament having moved from one
fabulous course to another over time.
On the last occasion the Irish Open was staged on the Killeen
course at Killarney in 1992, Faldo successfully defended the title
he had won there the previous year but only after a play-off win
over South Africa’s Wayne Westner.
Since 1992, the Irish Open has retained its reputation as a
wonderful festival of golf by visiting some of Ireland’s finest
parkland and links courses with Mount Juliet, Druids Glen,
Ballybunion, Fota Island, Portmarnock, Carton House, Adare
Manor Hotel & Golf Resort and Co. Louth Golf Club at Baltray all
playing host to the event.
And, now, in 2010, the cycle has come full turn with the 3 Irish
Open again to be staged on the Killeen course – one of three
layouts in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, which also boasts
Mahony’s Point and Lackabane – where some of the world’s top
players will seek to become the latest custodian of one of the
PGA European Tour’s most prized trophies.
As Redmond O’Donoghue, the chairman of Fáilte Ireland, put
it in recognising the significance of the Irish Open returning to the
south-west region, “Killarney is the spiritual home of Irish tourism
and there is something very wonderful about taking the Irish Open
there. It enhances the premiership status of the Irish Open.”
