CRAFTSMAN FURNITURE 3
MICHAEL DUNBAR
Mike Dunbar is considered the Dean of American Windsor Chairs. Since 1970 Mike
has been building and teaching others the traditional methods to build these chairs.
Today his chairs are avidly sought after and some appear in a number of public
collections. Mike teaches chair making at his studio in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
OVAL BACK WINDSOR
The oval back chair was traditionally used as a side chair and the
continuous arm chair compliments it well. This chair includes a tail
piece which was an option with chairmakers of the 18th century. These
bracing spindles make the chair much stronger by reinforcing the bow
against the sitter's weight.

bent using a form. This design has its origins in the coastal area
of Massachusetts. In this design the back spindles are turned
and are tenoned into the arms which gives the chair great
strength.
