The zeroes were the decade of speed—the world’s islands became circumnavigatory proving grounds. It was also a time for women expedition paddlers like Hadas Feldman, Justine Curgenven, Shawna Franklin and Wendy Killoran. Driving harder than anyone was Freya Hoffmeister. Unknown at the beginning of the decade, by its close the German athlete and businesswoman had paddled around Iceland, New Zealand’s South Island and Australia, set- ting speed records for each.

Inside and Outside Passage: New Zealanders Kevin and Garth Erwin (The Canada Alaska Kiwi Kayaking Expedition) paddle 2,500 nautical miles from Victoria to Glacier Bay Alaska on the Inside Passage, and then back to Victoria on the outside.

Iceland: Chris Duff, Shawna Franklin and Leon Sommé paddle 3,000 kilometres around Iceland in 81 days.

Great Britain: British police officer Sean Mor- ley completes the longest kayak journey undertaken in British waters—7,200 kilometres over six months around all of Great Britain’s inhabited islands.

South Georgia Island: Team Adventure Philosophy (Graham Charles, Marcus Waters and Mark Jones) from New Zealand completes the circumnavigation of this sub-Antarctic island, fol- lowed closely by a British/Israeli team led by Peter Bray and Nigel Dennis.

Newfoundland: Wendy Killoran becomes the first woman to paddle around The Rock, 3,000 kilometres.

Vancouver Island: Two record circumnavi- gations: Keirron Tastagh and Jeff Norville, 20 days in a tandem; Joe O’Blenis, 24 days, solo.


Iceland: Freya Hoffmeister and Greg Stamer set the speed record, 33 days.


Ireland: Marcus Demuth completes record solo circumnavigation, 42 days.

Tasman Sea: James Castrission and Justin Jones make the first kayak crossing from Australia to New Zealand, 3,319 kilometres.


South Island, New Zealand: Freya Hoffmeister breaks speed record, 2,400 kilometres, 70 days.


Vancouver Island: Sean Morley makes record circumnavigation, 18 days.


Oceans 8: Jon Bowermaster completes his de- cade-long quest to explore every continent by kayak.
