Circumnavigating Tierra Del Fuego New York City–based kayakers Marcus De- muth and Biff Wruszek are attempting the first-ever kayak circumnavigation of Tierra Del Fuego, South America’s southernmost tip and largest island. After a two-week delay awaiting arrival of their Valley Nordkapps, the pair launched on New Year’s Day from Punta Arenas, Chile. Tey plan to complete the 1,100-mile, counterclockwise journey in 60 days.

Dave and the Not-Giant-Enough Tuna Dave Lamoureux is a risk-loving securities trader from Chicago with an unusual hobby. He spends his downtime alone on the high seas off Cape Cod fishing for giant bluefin tuna from a 12-foot rec kayak. Last November he hooked a 157-pounder, fought the fish for two hours and towed it to shore. Despite land- ing himself a near-lifetime supply of sashimi, Lamoureux seemed disappointed to fall shy of the 187-pound record for the largest fish ever caught from a kayak, saying, “I’m going back out next week.”

Less Ice, More Paddling With global warming accelerating and scien- tists observing record-thin sea ice in the Arc- tic, the time has come to paddle the Northwest Passage. Charlie Hunter, Nigel Foster, David Tom and Glenn Lush will attempt a 2,500- mile, 85-day journey this summer from the town of Inuvik to Pond Inlet on Baffin Island, adding to climate change knowledge along the way by measuring the salinity of water in the Arctic Ocean.

The High Cost of Crying Wolf Last July, Kurtis Torsted of Salinas, Califor- nia, pleaded guilty to sending a false distress message to the U.S. Coast Guard on his VHF radio. Torsted radioed “Mayday Mayday” and said that he was in a kayak off the coast of Santa Cruz and having trouble getting back to shore, while in fact he was safe on land. Funny thing is, he’d already been busted for a three- year spree of similar hoax calls and sentenced to $29,000 and two years in prison—a stiff sentence but apparently not stiff enough.
