Treatment


If you have kidney stones, the goal of treatment is to:


get rid of current stones as painlessly as possible


avoid complications prevent future stones


To do this, you and your doctor will work together to develop a treatment plan. This plan will be based on the type, size and location of your stones. It will likely include one or more of the following:


Passing the stones—This is when you pass stones in your urine, by drinking about 2 to 3 liters of water a day. This is an option for smaller stones.

About 90 percent of stones will pass on their own, without treatment. But you still need to see your doctor to rule out other health concerns and find out the cause of your stones, so you can prevent new ones.
