Symptoms of Overactive Bladder


Telltale signs of overactive bladder include: Strong, sudden urges to urinate Urinating eight or more times in 24 hours


Getting up two or more times a night to urinate


Not making it to the bathroom in time


Leaking either small or large amounts of urine (called urge incontinence)


You might also find yourself cancelling plans for fear of accidents, always worrying about finding the nearest bathroom or wearing absorbent pads.


Risk Factors


These conditions and behaviors can increase your risk or trigger symptoms:


• weak pelvic muscles—common after childbirth


• nerve damage— from trauma or conditions like Parkinson’s or diabetes


• smoking • being overweight


• infections or other conditions—like bladder stones or enlarged prostate (in men)


• certain medicines— including some high blood pressure drugs, diuretics (water pills), muscle relaxers and sedatives
