Overactive Bladder

When you have overactive bladder, your bladder muscles contract too soon. This gives you a strong, sudden need to urinate, even when your bladder isn’t full.

You may also have incontinence, which is an uncontrollable leak or gush of urine. This is especially likely if the muscles that keep your bladder closed (your pelvic and sphincter muscles) are weak or damaged.

How It Works 1 Nerves in your bladder signal that it’s full too soon. 2 Bladder muscles contract when your bladder is still filling. 3 This creates a sudden urge to go. 4 Urine is forced out, especially if muscles are weak.
