Round 1-2 - Race Report
Story By: Jeff Henson
Weather reports had racers and photographers alike preparing for the
worst conditions, but Mother Nature loves a good motocross race, as
the rain was downgraded to an occasional light mist for the majority of
the day. The track conditions couldn’t have been much better.
Racers and race fans were treated to intense battles among both ama-
teur and pro races at the first round of this all new west coast ATV
motocross series. Racers complete two motos per round, each of which
last much longer than what is considered typical for motocross racing
– twenty-five minutes plus two laps each.
When the day was over, it was Chad Wienen who topped the pro race
podium with 1st place finishes in both motos. The east coast champion
now races for Motoworks Can-Am Team and says he’s been enjoying
racing on the west coast, which he claims is much different than racing
back home. “It seems like the tracks here are all backwards. You’ve
got to have a bike that handles the insides of the corners out east, and
out here it seems like there’s a lot more berm riding. The guys out
here that are really fast, like my teammate Jeremie Warnia and Dustin
Nelson, they put up a really good battle. I was really surprised when I
came out here how fast the racers really are,” claimed Wienen. Chad
went on to say he’s really looking forward to the next rounds in Cali-
fornia and Arizona.
Can Am’s Jeremie Warnia and Baldwin Racing’s Josh Upperman fin-
ished second and third, respectively. Both did a good job making sure
Wienen had to earn his win, as racing was tight all day long.
Yamaha YFZ450R racer Dustin Nelson plans to make the new series
part of his regular race schedule, despite having an electrical issue that
sidelined him during his first moto of the day. “This is a good warm up
series for me, a chance to get all of the bugs worked out,” said Nelson,
who will also be returning for the ITP QuadCross series and the World
Off Road Championship Series in 2010.
With round one complete, racers retreated to their hotels and race
rigs to prepare for round two the next morning. Two rounds are held
back to back at each race destination in an effort to keep travel costs
to a minimum for racers. It’s a unique race setup schedule that makes
dreams of clinching a national championship a lot more affordable for
pro and amateur racers alike.
