The largest cause of injuries in the NHS is slips
Last year, slips and trips resulted in:-
• Almost 11,000 major injuries
• 36% of total number of major injuries
• 30,000 over 3 day injuries
• 23% of the total number of over 3 day injuries
• In Local Authority enforced industries more than 42% of major injuries and 23% of over
three day injuries
Slips and trips are often the initiators of accidents attributed to other causes, such as some
machinery accidents, scalding and falls from height.
Looking at the industry sectors in more detail, the table below highlights the sectors with the
highest number of slip and trip major injuries and the profession within that industry which was
most at risk.

Buxton. The HSL used the Pendulum testing device to measure the 'Pendulum Test Value' or PTV,
(this closely relates to the coefficient of friction).
