Get to know... Alison Whitaker
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia Height: 5-9
What do you listen to on your iPod?
I listen to a lot of acoustic music. I love playing guitar in my free
time, so I love singer/songwriters. I love that kind of brooding,
painful music I guess you could say. I like everything. We listen
to a lot of House back home. A little bit of 80s music seems to
creep onto the iPod when I want to dance a little.
How long have you been playing the guitar?
For about four years. I just got one from my parents for Christmas
one year because I wanted to learn. I taught myself how to play
it. I just played with it and eventually caught on. I love it. It is a
good way to express the angst that golf sometimes gives you.
What are some of your favorite TV shows?
I am addicted to the food channel. It is quite sad. I was just home
and I was watching the Food Network in the middle of the day.
It is educational. It is entertaining. It gives you ideas for dinner.
Who is your favorite chef on the Food Network?
Bobby Flay is good. He is like the master of flavors. Everyone
makes a big hype about him, but I think he is actually pretty
gosh-darn good. Maybe one day I will get to create my own little
college chef edition on the network.
What are some of your favorite movies?
I am kind of a mixed bag when it comes to movies. I used to
groan and moan when my mom made me watch any movie
with a subtitle in it, but one of my favorite movies actually has
subtitles in it. Life is Beautiful is one of the best movies I have
ever seen. I also go for the shallow movies like Twilight and
things that eight-year-old girls fuss over.
What are the golf courses like in Australia?
Back home we have the links style golf courses. When you get
a sunset on a links style course, it is pretty amazing.
What are your favorite things to do when you go home?
Eat lamb. We have some of the best lamb in the world. It is
always my first meal when I get back. I am borderline scared of
it here, but back home it is pretty top notch.
What has been your favorite class at Duke?
I actually just finished a psychology class; it was a community
intervention seminar class. It was taught by Professor Kathleen
Sikkema. She is so passionate about what she does. She kind
of taught us to take what we are passionate about and turn it
into something to do with psychology.
