FROM the glories of spring, when Washington,
DC’s cherry trees burst into blossom, to the
glittering 100 miles of lights that mark the
festive season in Virginia, the Capital Region
has a huge range of well-known and not-so-well-
known special events that will captivate visitors
to the area. Here is a selection of some of them.
WASHINGTON, DC
NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL (March
27-April 11). Washington, DC. A celebration of the coming of
spring that commemorates the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo
mayor Yukio Ozaki in 1912. Highlights of the two-week festival
include the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and the Japan
America Society of Washington, DC’s Sakura Matsuri Japanese
Street Festival. T_h e parade features lavish fl oats, gigantic helium
balloons, exciting international performance groups, marching
bands and celebrity guests.

CAPITAL PRIDE (June 4-13) Washington, DC. T_h e fourth-
largest gay pride event in the country, Capital Pride events and the
Capital Pride Festival make up a nine-day celebration of diversity,
cultural achievement, civil rights issues and entertainment by and
for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, families and
friends.
