F there’s one part of the US that could easily justify the title of
Museum Capital of the World it would surely be the Capital
Region. With everything from the highly-acclaimed National Air
& Space Museum and fascinating National Museum of American
History to the quirky International Spy Museum and newly-
opened Taubman Museum of Art, it has museums to cater for almost
every age and interest.
First stop for any museum enthusiast has to be the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, DC, the world’s largest museum complex
and research organisation, with 19 museums (17 in DC, two in New
York City), nine research centres and the National Zoo – all free to

Make sure you wear comfy shoes for your visit as ten museums
span an area from 3rd to 14th streets between Constitution Avenue
and Independence Avenue along the National Mall. Ride the tourist-
friendly DC Circulator Bus for a dollar, plan ahead by logging on to the
Smithsonian Castle,
Smithsonian website (si.edu for all its museums) for ‘selected highlights’, Washington, DC
or get your bearings with the orientation video at the Smithsonian
Information Centre in the red sandstone ‘castle’, open daily from
8.30am to 5.30pm.
