A NEW ENGLAND FALL DAY
Arthur Tauck Sr. was a salesman who
loved life on the road; his trips often took him
from Pennsylvania north through New York
to Canada, across New England or down to
Washington, DC. One business trip took him
to North Adams, Massachusetts in the midst
of brilliant fall foliage. He was having lunch
at the Wigwam Restaurant, one of his favorite
places, when an idea started percolating. The
other diners were all mostly businessmen like
himself; there appeared to be no casual visitors
enjoying the spectacular foliage found along
New England’s back roads – possibly because
they didn’t know the area well enough to travel
without knowledgeable guidance? Over lunch,
he began to create his soon-to-be popular “New
England Fall Foliage Tour.” He knew the area,
and he knew that he could provide inspiration
and enrichment to others. The idea of being a
“tourist” wasn’t new – but the idea of a vacation
where transportation and every facet of the trip
was taken care of – that was new.
“A VACATION HINT”
That was the title of our first tour in 1925; the
pamphlet went on to read “A Six Day Tour in
spacious Touring Cars... Lots of Fun for All.” It
