IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ACCESS
In the 1950s, Arthur Tauck Jr. had great faith
that the Canadian Rockies were an enormously
appealing vacation destination – except for
one small problem. Transportation. Air travel
was still in its beginning stages, and it was the
railroads that owned the access to the national
parks – as well as their accommodations.
With his air charters a success, Arthur applied
for hotel rooms for his very interested air /
motorcoach guests in 1958. He was turned
down, as he was in 1959, 1960 and 1961 – but
in 1962, a motel outside of Banff said “okay” –
and he filled every room allocated. Canadian
Pacific Hotels was impressed, and two years
later gave Tauck space at their historic Banff
Springs property, “inside” the park – where to
this day, every Tauck journey stays.
TO THE PACIFIC & HELI HIKING
Trailblazing “firsts” in Canada continued;
in 1963, Tauck introduced Canada’s first
motorcoach tour linking the Canadian Rockies
with the west coast. And in 1978, enthusiastic
heli-skier Arthur Tauck met Austrian Alpinist
Hans Gmoser. Together they conceived a
way to afford summertime travelers access to
thousands of square miles of remote, beautiful
alpine scenery. Up, not “out,” beyond the reach
of the highway – it would be guided sightseeing
by helicopter, the innovative birth of Western
Canada’s heli-hiking.
I was in the Canadian Rockies watching a group arrive and a young girl came up to me and exclaimed

‘You’re Arthur Tauck!’ She hugged and kissed me and said ‘That’s from my mother. When she heard I was
taking a Tauck tour she broke into tears and told me that I’m the third generation to take a Tauck tour.’ That
is a real wow – we’re really in the business to make dreams come true for people. That may sound cliché, but
it’s true – and when you feel like you’ve done it, that’s one of the most satisfying things a person can ever
have in life. – Arthur Tauck Jr.
