Regarding photo-realism, I don’t analyze things too much,
that’s the way it is with me, my Orcas, I can make them look
photo realistic. People are startled when they walk by and see
my pieces, they think I dressed models up in latex suits and
took photographs of them. I am reminded to tell people they
are not photographs, but my art is all just derived from my
imagination.
Tell me about your “Second Coming”, what is behind it?
Having to work full time to raise a beautiful daughter has obvi-
ously been my priority for the past 16 years, and having almost
accomplished that I decided to cash in some savings and take
a few years off to see if I could start doing my art full time. The
past year I have been doing all kinds of fun work from painting
goalie masks to portraits and creating new Myorcas.
Are Orcas a passion of yours?
Living at the beach as a kid my family frequently rescued ani-
mals in distress. I grew up with a great respect for animals
and the environment. Everybody loves an Orca, I’m no different
than anybody else, they’re the wolves of the seas, like big dol-
phins, I have the same attraction everyone has toward Orcas,
everyone has that ‘panda bear’ draw or bond with them. We
can communicate with them, we can see ourselves as friends
of dolphins and Orcas. You get to see them as they interact
with humans. My main intention is, I want to paint pleasant
pictures, elegant pictures, I want to have appealing art.
Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?
On the corner in my cardboard box, shouting, “Orcas! Get your
Orcas!” Ha, ha, no. I use to be able to project what I’d like to do
in the future, but now I take things one day at a time and hope
they work out. I’d like to be making a comfortable living paint-
ing and creating thought-provoking subjects. I hope to evolve
and develop more things down the road and I hope it doesn’t
become too repetitive. I just want to be happy, I’m pretty happy
now. I’d like to do some more inventing, get into a little bit of
sculpture, modeling, doing things with my hands, I love to cre-
ate with my hands.
Thank you for your time, James, it’s been wonderful talking to
you, I wish you great success with your art. If you wish to see
