| DESTINATION REPORT | The Var-Provence region |
Toulon
There are two distinct parts to Toulon - the old town (or Basse Ville)
nearer the port and Haute Ville, the upper town. The first has an
atmospheric historic quarter around the ancient Cathedral where tiny
ochre, yellow and pink houses line narrow winding streets.
Haute Ville, on the other hand, is where Napoleon III ordered the
grandest buildings and bourgeois homes to be built. There is an
impressive opera house and railway station as well as the imposing
Place de la Liberte.
This area stretches towards Mont Faron, to which there is a 594-
metre cable car ride. As well as some beautiful views over the Bay of
Toulon, its naval base, nearby islands and the other mountains bordering
the city, this also brings visitors to the Mont Faron Zoo which has the
only wildcat breeding centre in France and also to the Allied Landings
Memorial Museum.
There is a special Pass which offers discounted travel and
sightseeing (including the cable car): tel + 33 (0) 9492 6825.
Other museums in Toulon include the only natural history museum in
Var Provence.
