Big in Japan, but not so easy in Europe…
T
ournaments on video games have their own set of challenges. Sega
Amusements Europe has run a couple of very successful tournaments on
two video games; namely World Club Championship Football (WCCF) and
Dinosaur King , the children’s card collecting game.
“These two titles lent themselves to the tournament format,” said Sega’s sales and
marketing manager Justin Burke. “But these were manual, operator-led tournaments,
where we relied on local companies to assist in running the tournaments.”
The Dinosaur King tournament was held in the UK and the final was run at
Butlins in Minehead, over 100 families took part and the prize was a Butlins
family holiday. The WCCF attracted players from the UK, Spain, Italy and
Germany and the prize was a pair of boots signed by Brazilian player Ronaldinho.
The European finalists got together for the final at an exciting event in London,
attended by some leading Japanese players.
“At the moment we don’t have a machine which is suitable for tournament
play,” adds Burke. “In Asia there is a real culture for tournaments and it is much
easier because the machines can be linked. This is not possible in the same way
in Europe as there are different internet providers in every country which makes
the situation impossible. So we have not gone down that route. But we will
continue to look at tournaments and when the right machine is there we will do
more events.”
