Historic homes
classical architecture,” explains Crispin
Holborow, head of Savills Country Department.
Architectural interest can greatly enhance
the appeal of a farm or estate. “Georgian
and Queen Anne farmhouses are by far the
most popular styles, principally due to their
symmetrical form and well-proportioned
rooms,” says Jessica Simpson of Savills.
“An estate with a classical house will have
a significant effect on value. Not only are they
a rarity, more buyers will be interested and
these houses, when sold with land surrounding
them for privacy and protection, achieve a high
element of marriage value.”
“Farm buyers fall into a few categories,” adds
Simpson’s colleague Alex Lawson. “Farmers and
investment buyers are looking for commercial
farmland alone, however for amenity and estate
buyers the house is just as important, if not
more so, than the land.”

London has relatively few listed buildings,
although some of the oldest estates and
squares of central London, in particular
Eaton Square and Sloane Square, have
large numbers of Grade II listed examples
concentrated in small areas.
“Many buyers love the cachet that goes
with history. Some overseas clients in
particular put a high value on a home with
a well-documented and notable background,”
says Jonathan Hewlett, head of Savills London.
Across the rest of the nation, buyers appear to
agree. Whatever the economic climate, it seems,
people clearly appreciate the beauty and style
associated with classical architecture. n
