Horsetowns: Santa Ynez Valley
What makes Santa Ynez a terrific ‘Horsetown?’
Ramon Becerra, Santa Ynez If there is a heaven, Santa Ynez Valley is the
gateway.
Brad Price & Nicole Chastain Price, Santa Ynez “Brad has been in T e Valley
14 years, and I have been here 4. Being both raised in the country in the Midwest, we love the rural feel and way of life, the small- town atmosphere, the gorgeous countryside, near perfect weather and the diversity of horses and disciplines you can fi nd here. We have world class trainers and breeders of all types here and several top vet clinics, so we are lucky to have experts all around us. It really creates a commu- nity of professionals who all understand what it takes to run a successful horse business of any kind. For us—and our clients—that is really important.
Hailey Johnson (age 11), Santa Ynez My favorite place to be is the Santa Ynez Valley Pony Club at Shepherd Ranch. I moved here 3 years ago and joined Pony Club. My mom was a member of the same club as a child, and I couldn’t wait to join. I joined when I was 8 and was crazy about horses and now I am working hard in hopes to pursue my dream and be in the Olympics someday.
Joe Olla, Santa Ynez Santa Ynez is where the vaquero culture was
born and is still alive today. From the active riding community to the “cowboy way” attitude of its people, T e Valley isn’t just a place, it’s a way of life. You can enjoy practically any horse discipline at the wonderful Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center or through participation with the Valley Penning Association or any one of the many men’s and/or women’s riding groups. Virtually all breeds hold shows and events here from reining to rodeo and Western dressage. When you buy in the Santa Ynez Valley, you’re not just buying a house—you’re buying a life- style!
Katherine Becerra (age 6), Santa Ynez I can ride my horse to school.
Lauren Jamison (Age 12), Santa Ynez I love riding at Shepherd Ranch. T e cross
country course is amazing! My best friends are members of Santa Ynez Valley Pony Club. We have sooo much fun together.
Natalie Billings, Santa Ynez T e Santa Ynez Valley is a great
place to ride. T e local feed store and tack store support our SYV Pony Club by giving us discounts. T e vets at Alamo Pintada are quick to come to the ranch where I lease my Pony Club horse. T e Equestrian Center where I ride in shows is close by. It is really a horse town. I love being a member of Santa Ynez Valley Pony Club. T ey have provided me with horses to lease since joining three years ago. As my riding improved, I was able to lease a diff erent horse so I could move to the next level.
Sophie Buelow (Age 15), Santa Ynez T e Santa Ynez Valley off ers a wide variety of activities for riders. You can do cross country, fox hunting, polo, dressage, and trail riding, which is what makes it so special. Everyone in the horse community is also so supportive of one another and is always cheering each other on. Pony Club has given me opportunities to become a more experienced rider through great instructors and clinics. Over the past nine years I have learned how to inde- pendently take care of my horse and I have made great friends all over the United States.
Brett Ellingsberg, Los Olivos We are so fortunate to have
a perfect climate and a peace- ful community that is ideal for horses and horse people to enjoy everything, from riding to wrangling, to roping, to just plain relaxing. Many of the top horse breeders call this area home— Arabian horses, Warmbloods, and even Minia- ture Horses can be found grazing on the valley’s green meadows and golden hills. T e Santa Ynez Valley is the essence of bucolic. My wife has lived here in the valley since 1984 and has been fully involved with the local horse community. We are proud to call many of the top trainers and breeders our friends.
Christina Barnes, Santa Ynez T e Santa Ynez Valley encompasses the towns
of Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Bal- lard, Solvang and Buellton, and is home to 50 diff erent breeds of horses ranging from miniatures to Drafts. Horses are active mem- bers of the community and bring people from all age groups, experience levels, and backgrounds together. Predominant disciplines here include, but are not limited to: dressage, hunters, jump- ers, eventing, cutting, reining, reined cow horse, Western pleasure, team penning, trail, endur- ance riding, barrel racing, roping, junior rodeo and driving. Many trail riders across our beauti- ful valley can take to the hills without hitching up a trailer. T ere are numerous associations that host competitions and/or social events. T e Santa Ynez Pony Club hosts several three-day events and horse shows each year in addition to educating the valley’s horse-loving youth. T e Sage Hens, Fillies, and Santa Barbara Trail Riders host multiple-day trail rides at diff erent ranches throughout the area. T e Rancheros Visitadores make their annual trek to Janeway Ranch each May. T e Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Associ- ation has a beautiful facility just minutes from downtown Santa Ynez. T e two full-size arenas, warm-up arena and round pen are valuable to riders that don’t have a facility of their own. T e Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Association hosts clinics and social events as well as hunter, jumper, dressage, Western and reining shows. In the winter and spring, the pastures are teeming with life as Santa Ynez’ breeding farms welcome the year’s foal crop. Arabians, T oroughbreds, Quarter Horses, and Miniature Horses are the most common. T is means the demand for local veterinarians is high. T e three local equine-spe- cifi c medical clinics in this area meet the needs of the many breeding farms and training barns in the area. It is not uncommon to see a group of riders crossing the road or a fi ne pair of Draft horses pulling a trolley through Solvang. Just take a walk through downtown Santa Ynez and you will see evidence of how highly-revered the horse is in the community. T ere are horseshoes from famous and well-loved horses embedded in the crosswalks on our very streets!
