Latest Arctic OPV enters service
Following delivery by Karstensens Shipyard in Denmark, the second in a
new class of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Royal Danish Navy has
entered service.
T
he vessel, which has been named
Ejnar Mikkelsen (P571), is,
like its predecessor, built for a
wide range of Arctic and coastal
operations and follows the first vessel,
Knud Rasmussen (P570), which was
commissioned into the Royal Danish
Navy on 18 February 2008.
Both vessels are powered by robust
twin-engine medium-speed propulsion
packages from MAN Diesel, based on
two 8-cylinder L27/38 medium-speed
engines, each resiliently mounted, and
each with a nominal rating of 2720kW
at 800rpm.
The engines drive a MAN Diesel
Alpha VBS 1080 series controllable pitch
propeller and an AVK shaft alternator
through a Renk NDSL-2500 twin-in/
single-out reduction gearbox.
