++An inspiration to those who participate
Anthony Tsang describes his experience as a first-time volunteer with Vitalise.
“I discovered Vitalise whilst I was on the internet searching for a charity that needed residential volunteer helpers. After finding out a little more, I decided to give Vitalise a try. I registered online and after the paperwork was in place, I was offered the opportunity to participate as a volunteer for one week at Vitalise Jubilee Lodge. I was initially excited, but at the same time a little apprehensive about what to expect and how I would cope.
Upon arriving, I had an opportunity to chat to the other volunteers and staff. Everyone was friendly, helpful and motivated, which helped me feel more relaxed. We had some short introductory sessions in which important information and skills were given. Following these sessions we were ready to work, but not before taking some time to get to know the guests and each other.
Although each day was relatively structured, the guests could choose to do as much or as little as they wanted. During my week we visited a variety of different locations including Lakeside Shopping Centre and the Greenwich Royal Observatory, all of which were thoroughly enjoyable. Besides our days out, we regularly ventured outdoors to explore the beautiful countryside and the riding stables nearby. In the evenings we enjoyed the entertainment including a live band, a karaoke night, a Tom Jones night and even a disco. Otherwise we were busy playing board games, chatting and socialising with the guests late into the night. The guests seemed to have even more energy than we did!
Volunteering at Vitalise has helped develop my communication and teamwork skills and provided a valuable insight into working with disabled people. Now I appreciate more than ever the hard work and dedication needed to be a full-time carer. I am confident that Vitalise will go from strength to strength and continue to provide an inspiration to those who participate.”
++Jack Petchey Awards
Three young volunteers at Vitalise Jubilee Lodge were awarded Jack Petchey Foundation Awards recognising their tireless fundraising efforts at a ceremony at the Centre in December. April Dickings, Jessica Lamb and Jake Smith received their awards from Anne McConnell of the Friends of Jubilee Lodge. This takes the total number of Jack Petchey Award winners to 32 in the past three years. Congratulations to you all.
