Coastingalong
Think of the British coast and too
many of us think of buckets, spades
and sandcastles. But there’s a very
different coast, one that takes your
breath away, says Aileen Scoular
If you love stunning storybook scenery and
rugged cliffs, the west coast of the British Isles will take your
breath away. The Atlantic Coast, with a leg in both Cornwall
and Devon, has a tantalising history, unforgettable views and
beautiful beaches. Highlights off the Atlantic Highway
(otherwise known as the less romantically monickered A39)
include the fishing village of Clovelly, Rick Stein’s restaurants
in Padstow and the legendary Tintagel Castle – rumoured
to be the birthplace of King Arthur. Climb to the top of the
castle to enjoy breathtaking views across the Atlantic, or
clamber down a deep valley, past the castle, and you’ll find
Trebarwith Strand beach. Further north is Croyde, long-time
favourite of Thomas Bell, editor of the Marine Conservation »
Society’s Good Beach Guide.
