The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has an available position for a sur-
vey statistician within the Surveillance Research Program (SRP) of the
Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences, National Cancer
Institute. SRP manages the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results
(SEER) Program, a comprehensive population-based cancer reporting
system. It also provides leadership in developing statistical methods and
models for use in the analysis and presentation of cancer data.
The Division uses surveys in a variety of ways from analyzing existing
data sources to carrying out large, complex surveys in order to model
trends in cancer incidence, mortality, and survival and their relationship
to changes in risk factors and cancer control practices in the population.
Examples of methodological activities include designing household
surveys for familial histories of cancer, hierarchal modeling of survey
data linked to census and Medicare data to examine variation in cancer
screening rates, designing and analyzing tobacco supplements to large
national surveys, producing small area estimates of the prevalence of
cancer risk behavior, and developing methods for optimally combining
cross-sectional surveys.
The position includes responsibility for initiating and managing collab-
orative analyses with scientists from NCI and other institutes, agencies
and academic centers and managing a portfolio of grants and contracts.
The position requires a doctoral degree and several years post-doctoral
experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essen-
tial. Salary commensurate with experience. Located in Rockville, MD,
near Washington, DC. Excellent benefi ts. U.S. citizenship or permanent
