Easton provides a central location for biking day
trips. From Easton, you can bike the quiet back
roads of Talbot County or make an excursion to
the neighboring towns of Oxford, St. Michaels, and
Tilghman Island. The triangle of Easton, Oxford,
and St. Michaels offers a variety of shops and res-
taurants within easy biking distance for the novice
and advanced cyclist. You can also hop the Oxford-
Bellevue Ferry, which crosses the Tred Avon River.
The scenic routes and flat terrain make bicycling
one of this area’s leading pastimes. Choose routes

Old Town Alexandria

The most accessible day trip is just across the
Potomac. Founded in 1749 and listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, Alexandria is
nationally recognized for its architecture, attrac-
tions, restaurants, and shopping. Alexandria is easily
reached without a car. Just take the Blue or Yellow
Baltimore Inner Harbor
Metro lines to King Street and look for the free

shuttle buses that run to the historic district. (It is
a 15- to 20-minute walk otherwise.) A more scenic
transit mode is the Potomac Riverboat Company,
which runs a water taxi service from the Georgetown
waterfront to Old Town. (Roundtrip rates Tuesday–
Sunday: adults $26, children ages 2–11 $14. Check
www.potomacriverboatco.com for coupons.) Wander
down cobblestone streets and browse the stores,
stopping at historic Christ Church, once attended
by George Washington and Robert E. Lee.
Children and adults alike will enjoy watching
local artists work in their studios at the waterside
Torpedo Factory (105 N. Union St.). Call (703)
