A Fine Victorian Gilt-Brass Eight-Day
Strut Timepiece with Calendar

The rectangular case is of typical high quality with multi-layered construction engraved all
over with foliage on a hatched ground. Loop handle to the top and pilasters to the sides.
The case is punch-numbered 1698 in many places including the base, the reverse of
the dial frame, the top of the dial plate and on the movement. The domed rear cover is
engraved with the retailer’s signature CHAS. FRODSHAM, Clock Maker to the Queen,
London. Circular escapement viewing portal above the signature with sliding cover,
folding winding stem below with engraved directional arrow. The base of the backplate
fixed with a spring-loaded strut
Silvered dial plate engraved overall with symmetrical foliage and with a rosette design to the
centre, the chapter ring with painted Roman numerals, the calendar below with adjustable
days of the week. Delicate original blued steel fleur de lys hands.
Typical Cole 8-day movement with D-shaped backplate, going spring barrel and four
wheel train ending in a fixed
horizontal platform with
lever escapement and cut
bimetallic balance with gold
compensation screws. The
front plate stamped 1698.
