A Very Fine George I Ebony Three Train
Quarter Chiming Large Table Clock
by
Joseph Windmills, London
The case has an inverted bell top surmounted by a substantial gilt-brass baluster handle
and flanked by four ball-and-spire finials. The sides of the case have long D-ended glazed
panels beneath sound frets that have been delicately pierced and engraved with foliage.
Similar quarter frets are set into the large breakarch glazed front door and the whole case
rests on a plinth base with multiple mouldings raised on gilt-brass bun feet.
The 8¾ inch x 13 inch gilt-brass dial is signed Jos. Windmills London on a silvered
chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, fleur de lys half hour markers and
diamond-form half quarter markers with minute track between. The matted centre has a
mock pendulum aperture with garnet-set mock pendulum and three ring-turned winding
holes. Original well pierced blued steel hands. Female mask-and-foliate spandrels to
the lower quadrants, the arch is centred by a large silvered calendar ring calibrated 0-31
with individual arrow markers - the matted centre has been cleverly pierced out to form a
star and revealing a brass dial plate beneath engraved with a sunburst. The surrounding
dial plate is delicately engraved with scrolling foliage and with an eagle either side of the
calendar ring. The two flanking subsidiary dials are for pendulum regulation and strike/
silent, both with the original blued steel hands and matted centres.
The very substantial three train movement has tall thick brass plates secured by 8 ring-
turned baluster pillars. The wheel trains with spring barrels and gut fusees. The going train
has the original verge escapement with altered backcock, brass-rod pendulum spring-
suspended from the regulation bar which has been decorated with wheatear engraving.
The quarter train chimes on six bells via six hammers; the strike train strikes the hours in
the normal manner on a larger bell. The backplate is beautifully engraved with scrolling
foliage and two birds either side of a wicker basket of fruit above an elaborate scrolling
signature cartouche signed Jos: Windmills London.
Original button-shaped pendulum holdfast
on the right side of the backplate,
the entire backplate is framed
within a fine border of
wheatear engraving.
