A Handsome Unrestored George III
Ebonised Striking Table Clock
with Original Double-Ended Crank Key
by
William Dutton & Sons, London No.210
circa 1785
❝ We like - country house condition and famous maker.
Don’t be put off by the degraded silvering on the dial – if you like a clean look it can easily
be re-silvered. Case straight out of the Mudge & Dutton workshop, lovely, clean masculine
mouldings and proper grown-up triple pads to the top. Original hands, lovely engraved
signature, with pendulum regulation in the arch. Movement unaltered since the day it was
made – just needs a clean.
Blue chip maker – Premium quality clock – Incredibly good value – we love it! ❞
The well-proportioned case with foliate cast brass handle to the breakarch top set with
three raised pads with concave mouldings. The sides of the case are set with pierced
brass fish scale frets, the glazed rear door has inner and outer double mouldings and the
moulded base rests on the original gilt-brass pad feet.
The 6¾ inch engraved silvered brass dial is signed Willm. Dutton & Sons London in the
centre of the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with the original pierced blued steel hands.
Calendar aperture above chapter VI and strike/silent lever above chapter XII. In the arch
is a subsidiary ring calibrated 0-15 with a blued steel hand to regulate the speed of the
pendulum.
The substantial movement with thick rectangular brass plates (4ml.) held together by
five front-pinned baluster pillars. The two trains have spring barrels and fusees with wire
(originally gut) lines; the going train has a half deadbeat escapement with the original
pendulum having a heavy brass-faced bob and steel rod suspended from a gilt-brass
regulation bar pivoted on a platform above the plates and regulated by a snail cam
behind the dial arch. The strike train operates on steel rack work planted on the front plate
and strikes the hours on the original bell which is inscribed in ink on the inside Note 17.
The plain backplate is signed in fluent script Willm. Dutton & Sons London No. 210. The
movement is secured to the case by two original brass L-shaped brackets
