FISHING ROD: Mount the fishing rod towards the front of the kayak on the same side as the downrigger so you can watch for downrigger releases signaling a bite. Angle the rod so it is perpendicular to the kayak and keep this rod fully loaded in order to take up as much line slack as possible when a strike releases the downrigger clip. You should angle the rod slightly upwards just enough to keep the rod tip out of the water.

» DEPTH MANAGEMENT A line counter reel helps with depth management. If you don’t have a line counter reel, one turn of the downrigger handle is approximately one foot. You can fine-tune this by pre-calibrating. Let out a known length of line and count how many turns you need to release to take up the slack in the line. Or let the downrigger down a bit and watch your fishfinder, which should easily mark your downrigger ball if let straight down. In any case, factor in the angle of the downrigger line when calculating the true fishing depth.
» LINE MANAGEMENT It is useful to let out the line in increments, say 20 to 30 feet at a time. Tighten down the downrigger and paddle forward a few strokes to maintain forward movement. Then loosen the downrigger and let out another 20 to 30 feet of line. Repeat as needed until the desired depth is reached. Leave the rod in the forward rod handle and engage the free-spool with the clicker on when letting line out to prevent backlashes in the reel.
