PRESSED FLOWERS

Keep spring year-round by pressing wildflow- ers. To do this, you first need to gather some wildflowers. Go on a hike and collect different types, being careful to break off just the flowers and leave the roots intact. Only gather flowers that are in abundance to ensure that there will be lots more next year. You can then build a flower press with a few simple materials and use your flowers for decorations all year long.

Materials: • Flowers—daisies, vetch, buttercups and other easily flattened flowers work best

• Heavy book, such as a phone book • Paper towels • Two pieces of cardboard

Instructions: 1. Cut each piece of cardboard to be a bit smaller than your book.

2. Make a flower press by placing four sheets of paper towel onto one of the pieces of cardboard, then layering your flowers, four more sheets of paper towel, and the sec- ond piece of cardboard. Set on a hard flat surface and place the heavy book on top.

3. Wait four weeks for your flowers to dry. No peeking!

4. Glue your dried flowers onto paper to make cards and bookmarks, decorate a box to keep all your nature keepsakes in, or sprinkle them into a picture frame that holds a photo of your wildflower expedition.

Afternoon project If you’re too excited to wait for your flowers to dry out, you can create an instant wildflower bookmark. Arrange your flowers on a piece of cardboard and seal them by wrapping the card- board in clear packing tape. Hole-punch the top and tie some yarn on for a tassel.
