Norwegian director Bent Hamer’s latest fi lm O’Horten is a wry, comedic yet
poignant look at a middle aged man who is on the verge of retirement. But
upon his last day at work as a train engineer, he is suddenly faced with larger
existential questions about the meaning of his life and what he will do with the
rest of his years. Hamer, whose previous fi lms, Kitchen Stories and Foctotum,
were critically acclaimed, enjoys pondering the questions of everyday life.
While he refuses to say which directors have infl uenced him in his cinematic
style, he is clearly infl uenced by art, literature and his late mother—a tomboy
ski jumper who was the inspiration for the protagonist’s mother.
