Director James Gray recently returned from a trip to Paris where he was awarded
the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris in recognition of his work. Gray, whose
last three fi lms, Little Odessa, The Yards and We Own the Night, has been a French
favorite for several years now. While his fi rst three movies were gritty and edgy takes
on life, his latest fi lm, Two Lovers has a much more melancholy, contemplative feel.
Starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix, the fi lm is a romantic drama about a
charming but restless and troubled young man who lives with his parents. He meets
two very different women and inevitably falls for the wild, unattainable beauty played
by Paltrow. Gray says Two Lovers is his favorite fi lm and certainly his most intimate.
Next on his plate is The Lost City of Z, the story about British explorer Percy Fawcett
who is sent to the Amazon to survey land borders and discover an alleged lost city.
He eventually disappears into the jungle.
