A SHINING EXAMPLE


There’s no secret to making light. All light is a form of energy. Most light is produced by heat. Bioluminescence is different, though. It’s sometimes called a “cold light” because it’s made with almost no heat. Take the Jamaican click beetle,


for example. It has light organs on its undersides. A chemical reaction inside its body creates a cold light. It glows so brightly, some people used to put the beetles in an empty gourd and make a lantern.
