This kingfi sher’s bill is unusually long and strong. It’s specially adapted for


catching snakes.


This kingfi sher doesn’t fi sh. It hunts for insects and small reptiles in the desert and scrubland where it lives. It uses its strong, short bill to dig in dirt to fi nd its


prey. Its feathers act as camoufl age.

Most kingfi sher species live alone and defend their


territories. Male and females only come together to raise


a family. Kookaburras have a more social behavior. Helper birds assist a breeding pair


raise young, collect food, and defend the nest.
