here’s a lot of talk these days about the ongoing renaissance in manufacturing technologies and how disruptive many of these technologies will be in the years to come as 3D printers, additive-subtractive machines and all-new multifunction, multitasking machine tools continue to lean out the various processes used to make things.
But as many who make parts for the medical device market
know, the disruption has already taken hold, and it’s spreading. Take Stryker Corp. (Kalamazoo, MI). The medical device and equipment fi rm, a leader in orthopedic implants best known for hip and knee implants, uses 20 3D printing ma- chines for part production and fi ve for research and develop- ment, said Gene Kulesha, senior director, Platform Technol- ogy Engineering, R&D Business Unit, Stryker Orthopaedics. While the company is focused on printing only metal parts for now—he wouldn’t name their preferred printer—Stryker is already planning for its own disruption, too. Kulesha said Stryker is working with hospital groups to
create a small 3D printer that would print custom implants in hospitals, seemingly circumventing Stryker’s own production
