• Maximum 6-8 athletes per station.


• Warm-up or free play should last 5-6 minutes at beginning or end.


• Station length

• Make every station fun — a game, a competition or a race.


• No whiteboards, whistles or waiting.


• Get down on one knee at eye level to talk to the kids.


• Use cones to tell them where to go.


• Bring lots of


enthusiasm and energy. Smile a lot.


• Compliment each kid by name while he or she is at your station.


• Lots of high fi ves and cheering encouraged.


• Keep explanations to 15-20 seconds.


• Limited coaches? Use parents. Stations should be simple enough in design to require minimal training.

• Limited space? Reduce stations.


• Water breaks? Place 2-3 water bottles at each station and encourage hydration.


• Scrimmages? Devote time that allows athletes to take the skills they have learned in stations and put them to use in a context related to competition. It could even be one of your stations.

STATION 1


DODGE A COACH Time: 5 minute


Players: 4-6


Set up cones as shown. Players start at one end of the cones and perform a specifi ed dodge (face, roll or split) around the coach. When they get to the end, they turn around and repeat using their other hand.


STATION 2


HULA-HOOP PASSING Time: 5 minutes


Players: 6-8


Divide into two teams with partners on each side. Parents walk around the fi eld carrying a hula-hoop through which players must throw the ball to a partner on the opposite team.


STATION 3


2V2 GAME TO 1 Time: 5 minutes


STATION 4


MESSY BACKYARD Time: 5 minutes


Players: 4-8


Divide players into two teams. Scatter equal number of balls on each half of the fi eld. Players run around, scoop a ball on their side and roll it to the other side. After 1-2 minutes, stop play and have the players count the number of balls on their side. Fewest wins.


STATION 5


ODD NUMBER KEEP AWAY Time: 5 minutes


Players: 5-7


Set up cones 10-15 yards apart. For one-minute intervals, the team with more players must keep possession of the ball as defenders try to take it away. Offense gets a point for keeping possession. Defense gets a point for either forcing an offensive player out of the box or acquiring the ball.


STATION 6


SCORE ON ANY GOAL Time: 5 minutes


Players: 6-8


Players try to score on any of the four goals. Each teammate must touch the ball before a shot for the goal to count. If the ball changes possession, the new team attempts to score.


Scoop For Small Ball Players: 4-6


With goals on each end of the alley, send out players in pairs to compete 2v2. First goal wins.
