Pumped for
pumpkin pour
Some metalcasters are so excited about pouring metal, it’s spooky! That’s the case for industrial studies students at University of Wisconsin-Platteville (Platteville, Wis- consin). Every year since 2013, the university’s industrial studies department and AFS student chapter have held an iron pour coinciding with Halloween, during which the local community can witness the unique spectacle of molten iron. The group is overseen by Dr. Kyle Metzloff, who is a Foundry Education Foundation (FEF) Key Professor. At the event, sand molds are filled with molten iron to form vari- ous cast shapes, including pumpkins. The night is not complete without a demonstra- tion of pouring liquid iron into a pyramid of real jack-o-lanterns. FEF provides resources to certified metalcasting programs at colleges and univer- sities to develop technical talent for the industry. The Key Professor endowment from FEF at UW-Platteville and other FEF-certified schools ensures the education of current and future students can include a metalcasting curriculum.
