NCGA Team Match Championship TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

Poppy Hills GC | Oct. 22–23

Saturday Finals champ Stonetree Golf Club of Novato finally nabbed its first title.

Stonetree GC put on a clinic in the Overall Championship finale, defeating runner-up and Thursday Finals winner Oakhurst CC of Clayton, 28-8. It marked the first time since 2009 a Saturday Finals champ has won the overall crown and was a bit of redemption for Stonetree GC. In 2012, they won the Saturday Finals but lost the Overall Championship to Whitney Oaks. “It feels fantastic. It’s a lot of hard work,” said Stonetree GC captain Chris Hyland. Stonetree GC raced to a 9-3 lead thanks in part to wins by Hyland and partner Roy Gulick and wins by Nick Mahoney and partner Tom Dillon. Later, Joseph Amadea and Phil Green swept their matches, giving Stonetree GC a 15-3 lead. They’d clinch the title when Rune Jensen and partner Nickolai Mathison won their Four-Ball match and teammate Mark Nelson won his match. Along with great play, experience was a key for Stonetree GC. Six players from the 2012 runner-up squad were still on the roster. “That helped a lot,” Hyland said. The championship uses a format where two players from a side face off against two players from an opposing side in four-ball and individual matches concurrently, with players earning two points for a win and one point for a halve.

St. Francis of Mountain View kept rolling along, while Carondelet’s Yealimi Noh picked up a win in extra holes. St. Francis of Mountain View claimed its fourth straight title, shooting a team score of 20-over 380 to defeat

runner-up Dougherty Valley. The four in a row tied the NCGA/CIF record held by St. Francis of Sacramento, who accomplished the feat twice (1999-2002, 2006-2009). Leading the Lancers were Maya Pugatch (74) and Bibilani Liu (75). Dougherty Valley, who came in at 387,

was paced by a 74 from Jacqueline Ha and 76 from Belinda Hu. Noh, meanwhile, got her first NorCal win in dramatic fashion, defeating Ty Akabane of San Ramon Valley and

Jessica Luo of Lynbrook on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after the three finished regulation tied at 1-over 73. On the first playoff hole (par-5 10th), Noh made birdie while both Akabane and Luo made par.
