New Year,New Look G

BY RICHARD J. CERAME, PUBLISHER

reetings from NCGA headquarters at Poppy Hills and thank you for renewing your NCGA membership for 2017. Chances are you’ve already noticed some robust

changes to the look of NCGA Golfand can’t wait to breeze through this column to see all the improvements we’ve made throughout the magazine! If we’ve done our job right, we’ve already leaped the biggest hurdle in the magazine business: getting people to open the mag-

azine. I’d like to use this opportunity to share the work that went into creating this issue and also why it’s never been a better time to be an NCGA member. Here at the NCGA we want you to view the magazine as a valuable member benefit that you anticipate receiving each quarter and also create a “fear of missing out” mentality with our non- members so they’re encouraged to join our 150,000 member strong community. In addition to the changes to NCGA Golf, we’ll be rolling out a new website and four new communication vehicles next month in order to better streamline our mes- saging. We want to be sure you don’t miss any updates of member benefits, including what’s going on at our two golf courses, Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge, as well at our network of member clubs. These efforts, coupled with our new Weekend Net Tour and NCGA Play! programs designed to increase participation amongst all skill levels, all help support the NCGA mission: to support and promote the game of golf. Commencing with this issue, we’re proud to announce a publishing partnership with one of the industry’s leading experts, Rick Summers. A 30-year veteran of the trade, Rick publishes PGA Magazine and other state and regional golf association magazines including The Met Golfer – where I first honed my editorial chops back in 2000 –and teamed up with Jack Nicklaus in 1988 to create Great Golf Resorts of the World. Rick’s team has brought a fresh perspective on how the magazine looks and reads; we’re confident you’ll appreciate their contributions in upcoming issues. The magazine is in very capable hands and we’re anxious to hear your thoughts on

this debut issue, which proudly features San Jose Country Club on the cover. Not only is SJCC one of our five founding NCGA member clubs, it’s also been the longtime home club of our new President Pat Quinn. You’ll get to know more about Pat on page 26, as well as his “Brigade” which generated $250K for the NCGA’s Youth on Course program during this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Pat’s enthusiastic personality and passion for the game speak volumes for all the NCGA embodies. And speaking of personalities, there’s no one more proud to wave the NCGA flag than reigning U.S. Amateur and NCAA champ Bryson DeChambeau. The Clovis native and former Junior Tour standout granted us an exclusive look at his new “Face- On” putting technique that he debuted on the PGA Tour this season. We met Bryson and his longtime coach, Mike Schy, two days before Christmas at their studio at Dragonfly CC in Madera. Bryson’s confidence was certainly infectious and made us believers; check out page 38 to see if “Face-On” putting works for you. Rounding out the feature well is a travel story on Hawaii (page 42), an up close

look at the Monterey Peninsula Foundation (page 32), a preview of the 2017 NCGA championship calendar (page 36) and our annual golf course directory (page 67). We hope you enjoy the issue and welcome your candid feedback. It’s going to be a groundbreaking year at the NCGA. We’re glad to have you on board.
