Counting Sheep? Steve Young Counts Shots at Pebble Beach Every Night

NCGA Golf caught up with Steve Young on the Pebble Beach practice green before the annual San Francisco 49ers-Giants Chevron Charity shootout. Young helped teammates Jerry Rice, Brent Jones and Dwight Clark defeat the Giants on the five-hole whisky route.

HOW MUCH DO YOU GET TO PLAY? I’ve got too many little kids. I’ve got four under 14. If I can get one to fall in love with golf, I could get out more and have more excuses to play. But I think about golf all the time.

HOW’S YOUR GAME? I was with Hank Haney on the driv- ing range, and he solved it all. I was killing it. So if Hank can walk with me everywhere, I’d be great.

WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING? I started playing growing up in the mean streets of Greenwich, Conn. But there were only righty clubs in the garage, so that’s why I started playing righty. I always wondered if I would be a better player lefty, but that would be hard now.

DO PEOPLE RECOGNIZE YOU WHEN YOU PLAY? I play at Palo Alto Muni and Stan- ford. In Palo Alto, people don’t care.

They’re like, ‘Whatever. You’re not Steve Jobs. You play football? Do you play sports? Are you a sportsman?’ + + +

IS IT EXCITING FOR YOU TO PLAY PEBBLE BEACH? Honestly, when I go to bed, I play Pebble. That’s how I go to sleep. I’ve played it 10,000 times. I’ve gotten to hole 5 or 6, but I usually birdie No. 1, birdie No. 2, and then fall asleep. It’s funny that I’m here, because that’s literally what I do. I’m going to take in No. 1 and try to remember each tree as I go to sleep tonight.

WHAT WAS YOUR TAKE ON HOW THE SUPER BOWL ENDED? It was a compelling matchup to watch, more so than the last few Super Bowls. That last play, I’ve never seen an inside throw from the 1-yard line. In my whole life. I was standing about 10 yards away, and no one was more shocked than me.

HAVE YOU EVER THROWN A ROUTE LIKE THAT? Not from there. I mean, from the 5-yard line? From the 8? Yeah, you can do that with a little more space. But not from the half-yard line. No way. It took a lot of people making mistakes for that to happen. It’s so unfortunate that every- thing came down to that one play.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF ALL THE CHANGES THE 49ERS HAVE MADE? A lot has happened. I just don’t know the players. I don’t know the coaches. I guess we hope it works. It’s obviously a high-risk move, people without history, without heritage, without a resume. But Andy Reid was a special teams coach and took a head job and did great. You just jump behind Jim (Tomsula), and hope he does well.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE RUN THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS HAVE PUT TOGETHER? It is incredible. Usually when you see a dynasty, there are five guys going to the Hall of Fame, and they are the reason they are winning, and you put people around them. But this is a group that figured out a way to go win it. You almost get a feeling when they get in the playoffs. I can feel that they are going to win it. I don’t know what it is about them. I’m sure they have a tough time putting the calculus to it all, but it is fun to watch, and fun to be a part of.
