Yinzi Xin’s work in astrophotonics involves imaging and characterising exoplanets, as well as designing and experimenting with novel instruments to reject unwanted starlight. Her main project is the Photonic Lantern Nulling Interferometer – a design she conceptualised – which enables broadband, high-resolution spectroscopy of exoplanets at and within the diffraction limit of a telescope. “Our technology opens a new era of green communication, significantly reduces carbon emissions, and makes the planet a better place for all of us,” says Yosef Ben- Ezra, CTO of start-up NewPhotonics. Ben-Ezra is developing a new generation of optical transceivers to replace power- hungry digital signal processors. Implementing all-optical signal processing, he says, will significantly reduce power consumption while improving overall performance – something he believes will benefit data centres for high-performance computation and generative AI.
Ben-Ezra’s team recently invented a non-
invasive photonic device which, he says, “allows the monitoring and calibration of complex integrated photonic systems". He adds: “It is a non-invasive photonic
device that simultaneously measures the light intensity in the optical waveguides and required phase matching in the integrated photonic systems and will become one of the critical components in a variety of applications such as programmable photonic systems, quantum computation and communication, photonic encryption, and so on.”

technologies – and astrophotonics in general – are very promising for ground-based astronomy, it's unclear if they will be at the requisite technology readiness level in time to be included in the Habitable Worlds Observatory. However, if mature enough in time, they could provide unique and compelling spectroscopic capabilities.”
