The industry’s most innovative people 2024 Bárbara Buades

Organisation: Meetoptics Role: CEO and Co-founder

Bárbara Buades is the CEO and co-founder of photonics database company Meetoptics as well as an Optica Ambassador, with more than 29,000 followers on LinkedIn. Meetoptics, she says, has created

the largest database of products and technologies in the industry to help engineers and researchers find and understand the products they need to develop their technology more efficiently. “The photonics market has thousands of specialised companies willing to provide high-end solutions. However, it’s hard for them to find the end users of their

Role: Chairman; Professor

Beat Ruhstaller is a professor at Zurich University of Applied Sciences and Chairman, CEO and founder at Fluxim, which delivers software and hardware tools designed for advancing OLEDs, display technologies, batteries, and solar cells. According to his IEEE profile, he was

involved in OLED modelling at the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, CA, USA, as well as in OLED display technology development at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Rüschlikon, Switzerland. In 2006, Ruhstaller spun out Fluxim from the Institute of Computational Physics at

the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. He led a team of experts and oversaw the development of the Setfos software for OLED/OPV simulation, as well as promoting R&D activities and virtual lab tools in the production line-up. Today, he continues the development of the measurement hardware Paios and Phelos, an angular luminescence spectrometer used to characterise light-emitting devices and thin films over varied emission and polarisation angles. Role: R&D Director of Laser Microprocessing

Bogusz Stępak’s team is developing and optimising industrial laser processes, including glass cleaving, drilling, ablation of various materials, semiconductor processing, and surface functionalisation. “We work tirelessly to enhance various

areas of laser processing, such as increasing ablation efficiency and removal rates, improving the quality and throughput of glass cleaving, and developing new surface properties for superior performance. Our efforts will ultimately benefit the manufacturing industry, especially in the display and consumer electronics markets and medicine.”

He says they have recently made surprising findings in the lab, particularly in the field of glass processing: “Using ultrashort pulses, we've achieved incredible flexibility and efficiency. "Our latest breakthrough involves beam shaping that allows for omnidirectional laser cleaving without the need for a complicated optical set-up. This means we can cleave lines and round shapes super quickly – over 2m/s – for any glass thickness under 1.5mm. And the best part? The glass separation is easy and the edge roughness is typically less than Sa < 0.5µm.”

solutions and for the engineers it can take up to eight weeks to find the right company suitable for their development,” Buades says.

She adds: “We want to help not only

people already familiarised with optics and photonics but also engineers in fields such as telecoms, electronics, and mechanics, who may need to understand how optics and photonics work to improve their technologies, helping millions of people over the coming years.” Buades will be attending SPIE Photonics West 2024 in San Francisco.
