INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION: VDMA

VDMA Working Group: Laser and Laser Systems for Material Processing

For more than three decades, the VDMA laser working group has been a valued contact by politics, science and the press, explains Dr Sven Breitung, Managing Director

The VDMA Working Group Laser and Laser Systems for Material Processing was founded 35 years ago. Our members comprise suppliers of components directly related to the end applications of laser processing, laser manufacturers and system integrators, as well as research institutes and universities.

Activities of the working group Building on previous work in the area of OPC UA for laser machines, an interface standard for digital networking in production, further work has now been started towards an OPC UA Companion Specification. The goal is to create an internationally accepted standard. A first release candidate will be published in June 2023. The working group has supported the activities of the European association CECIMO to develop a CE Guide for laser machines for market surveillance authorities and customs. The CE Guide was published by CECIMO in August and distributed to the relevant authorities. Twice a year, a survey is conducted among member companies on the market situation of the laser industry, as well as the presentation of German and international production and foreign trade of laser machines, which

is presented at the members' meetings. In addition, market figures are provided by the VDMA and VDW. The working group is the conceptual

sponsor of Laser World of Photonics and World of Quantum in Munich, has its own booth at the show and participates in the opening press conference. Here, the market situation is presented and member companies such as Trumpf, EMAG LaserTec, Laserline and Coherent shed light on the use of lasers in terms of sustainability. We also participate in the opening press conference of the LASYS trade fair for laser materials process in Stuttgart.

The working group is active in press and

public relations and there especially in the association media of the VDMA and the VDW. In its own newsroom on the Industry Arena, news from both members and the association is posted, as well as the members' company profiles.

The VDMA looks after the topic of export

control for the members of the working group from a technical and legal perspective. Within the VDMA, the Working Group Laser

and Laser Systems for Materials Processing is leading the VDMA Quantum Technologies and Photonics Forum. The Quantum Technologies and Photonics Forum was founded with the vision of bundling and more strongly networking the existing competencies and resources in the VDMA in the specialist field of quantum technologies and photonics. By working together in a forum, association- internal synergies are used and invested in joint commitment to the future of quantum technologies and photonics.
