INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION: LIA
LIA: Educating, training and building the laser community
Jana Langhans, Marketing Project Coordinator of LIA, on how the association empowers laser professionals through its training, publications, conferences and workshops
The Laser Institute (LIA) is the international professional society for laser applications and safety that serves industrial, educational, medical, research, and government communities. Originally known as the Laser Industry Association, LIA was founded in 1968 by people who represented the heart of the profession – a group of academic scientists, developers, and engineers who were truly passionate about taking emerging new laser technology and turning it into a viable industry. Laser pioneers such as Dr Arthur Schawlow and Dr Theodore H Maiman were among LIA’s founders, who set the stage for our enduring mission to promote laser applications and their safe use through various outlets.
Education and safety For over 50 years, the cornerstone of our non-profit has been safety. As lasers started becoming more common, it became imperative to provide guidance on how to use lasers safely and prevent injury. As the industry continues to grow, promoting safety continues to be a big part of our mission, mainly through our laser safety training. We are proud to offer convenient learning options with online, classroom-based, and onsite training for anyone in the industry. The Laser Institute is also recognised as an authority on laser safety because we
have the honour of being the secretariat to the Accredited Standards Committee Z136 For Safe Use of Lasers and publisher of the ANSI-approved Z136 series of the laser safety standards. These documents provide a thorough set of guidelines for implementing a safe laser programme. In 2005 LIA also joined the OSHA Alliance, creating compliance resources and training OSHA compliance officers all over the nation.
Generating community and encouraging collaboration LIA is comprised of individual and corporate members from over 30 countries around the world. Our members are laser researchers, manufacturers, integrators, and end users – all working together to increase the use and safe application of laser technologies. Many dedicated members of the LIA go on to reach the highest possible level of membership and become Fellows, widely recognised for exceptional professional contributions to both the laser community and the LIA. We consistently identify solutions to
professional challenges by facilitating a collaborative environment through our membership and industry events. Our conferences are considered to be the best forum for exchanging up-to-date technical information on laser technology, applications, and safety. No matter what the laser-related
question, the answer can be found at an LIA conference or event. The International Congress on Applications
of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO) is LIA’s annual conference, which has been an industry staple since 1982. One of the biggest draws of ICALEO is that it provides students from all over the world with the opportunity to have their work peer-reviewed and included in our Journal of Laser Applications. Contributors present their work in front of some of the brightest minds and leaders in the industry. ICALEO also brings together top companies to exhibit and share their newest, cutting-edge technology. The International Laser Safety Conference
(ILSC), first held in 1997, covers all aspects of laser safety practice and hazard control, with scientific sessions to address developments in regulatory, mandatory, and voluntary safety standards for laser products and for laser use. The Laser Additive Manufacturing
workshop (LAM) brings together industry specialists from around the world to provide insight into highly focused areas of laser additive manufacturing, specifically in lasers, optics, and sensors. These events serve as a forum for
professionals in the laser industry to network, and it continues to be inspiring to see so many notable faces show up time and again throughout the years, fostering both rekindled and new relationships within the field. Our dedication to education, safety training,
and community-building has made LIA a trusted and respected source for anyone in the laser industry. LIA will remain committed to keeping abreast of changes and providing innovative solutions. We look forward to continuing our mission of advancing laser applications and promoting safety worldwide.
About LIA
LIA is The Institute for Photonic Materials Processing Innovation. Our vision is to help make the world a better place through safe, optimal and novel use of lasers, optics and photonics, including quantum science and technology, and their application to advanced materials.
